Vehicle Age Requirements

Zimbabwe regulations specify maximum vehicle ages for import. Understanding these rules is critical before purchasing a vehicle overseas.

🚗
Private Vehicles
MAXIMUM 10 YEARS

Private passenger vehicles (sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, double cabs used privately) must be manufactured within 10 years of the date of import into Zimbabwe.

Example
Importing in June 2026 → vehicle must be June 2016 or newer.
Saloon / Sedan SUV / 4×4 Hatchback Double Cab (private)
🚛
Commercial Vehicles & Machinery
NO AGE LIMIT

Commercial vehicles, heavy machinery, and agricultural equipment are exempt from the 10-year age rule. These can be imported regardless of their year of manufacture.

Includes
Trucks, buses, tractors, excavators, graders, cranes, forklifts and agricultural machinery.
Trucks / Lorries Buses / Minibuses Tractors Excavators Graders / Dozers Forklifts Cranes Agricultural Machinery
Age measured from manufacture date, not model yearVehicle age is calculated from the date of manufacture on the chassis plate — not the model year. A January 2016 made vehicle imported in February 2026 would be just over 10 years old and ineligible for private import. Always verify the manufacture date before purchasing. There are websites that can help to verify the manufacture dates of vehicles online.

Common questions

Can I import any vehicle that is exactly 10 years old?
The 10-year rule is based on the manufacture date printed on the chassis plate, not the model year or registration year. A vehicle manufactured in December 2015 would be ineligible for private import in January 2026 as it would be just over 10 years old. We always verify the exact manufacture date before sourcing a vehicle for you.
Are commercial vehicles really exempt from the age rule?
Yes. Trucks, heavy machinery, buses, agricultural equipment and construction plant are exempt from the 10-year age restriction under Zimbabwe's import regulations. You can import a 1995 excavator or a 2000 tipper truck without any age-related restriction. The standard duty rates and ZIMRA processes still apply.
What does "CIF value" mean and how does it affect my duties?
CIF stands for Cost + Insurance + Freight. It is the total value of the vehicle as it arrives at the Zimbabwe border — combining the purchase price, international shipping cost, and marine insurance. ZIMRA calculates all customs duties and VAT based on the CIF value, so a higher shipping cost or insurance premium will increase your duty bill. This is why we recommend sourcing from Dubai or South Africa for budget-sensitive imports — lower freight means lower CIF, which means lower duty.
Can I import a left-hand drive vehicle into Zimbabwe?
Yes, left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles can be imported into Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe drives on the left and right-hand drive is preferred, but LHD vehicles are legal. They are commonly imported for commercial and agricultural use, and are available from Dubai, the USA, and continental Europe. Note that some LHD vehicles may attract additional scrutiny at VID roadworthiness inspection.
How long does the full import process take?
From deposit payment to vehicle delivery: Japan: 45–60 days · UK: 15–25 days · Singapore: 45–60 days · South Africa: 5–7 days. The main variables are shipping transit time and ZIMRA clearance speed. ZIMRA typically clears vehicles within 2–5 days once all documents are correct and duties are paid.
What payment methods do you accept for the import service?
We accept USD cash, bank transfer (RTGS/Zipit), EcoCash, OneMoney, Innbucks, Paynow and international SWIFT transfer for the overseas purchase portion. ZIMRA duties must be paid in USD — we provide you with a proforma invoice and facilitate the duty payment. Our service fee can be paid in installments.
Can you help me import a vehicle for a company?
Yes. We assist companies, parastatals and NGOs with commercial vehicle and fleet imports. Corporate imports use a different duty tariff for qualifying commercial vehicles and may be eligible for duty deferment or rebate under specific ZIMRA schemes. We require company registration documents, a company resolution authorising the import, and a valid tax clearance certificate.
How does the vehicle sell commission work?
Listing your vehicle costs a one-time $5 fee, paid upfront when you submit your listing — this is non-refundable and covers verification and admin. On top of that, we charge 5% of the final agreed sale price (minimum $150 for vehicles under $3,000), only if your vehicle actually sells. Our fee covers professional photography, listing management, buyer vetting, viewings, escrow payment handling and ownership transfer documentation. You receive the sale proceeds minus commission within 1 business day of vehicle handover.
